Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the chance of his "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
