The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
