The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
